incident

July 2021 Looting & Civil Unrest in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa

focus area

Emergency Logistics & Humanitarian Aid Coordination

challenge

In July 2021, widespread looting and civil unrest in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) led to severe supply chain disruptions, leaving communities without access to essential goods. Supermarkets, pharmacies, and supply depots were destroyed, resulting in food, medical supply, and hygiene product shortages. Many vulnerable populations, including children, the elderly, and those in informal settlements, were left without support.

With transportation routes blocked and mass shortages across supply chains, humanitarian response teams struggled to deliver aid effectively.
